To Mel and Back Pt. 3 – The Fitness Journey of One Adelaide Mum

Facing the honest truths and stress eating

October 15th, 2019

I read somewhere that you can’t out-train a bad diet …. tell you what, I’m giving it a red-hot crack!!

Why is it, when someone mentions the word ‘nutrition’, I inwardly groan, feel pangs of self-loathing, then make myself feel better by hiding in my pantry and devouring a block of chocolate?

For me, and a lot of ladies, the good stuff all tends to pool around the stomach… so then the questions start coming … “congrats! I didn’t know you were expecting again?”

Yeah, I’m expecting to give birth to a large pizza any minute …

I know I’m making light of this, but the truth is, fitness is not just about exercise.  It’s about fueling your body with the right stuff also, and truly, us mum’s really need, no, DESERVE that.  For me, my trigger for eating badly is stress, and I’ve had a lot of it of late.  Starting a new job, studying for exams, interrupted sleep patterns… it all contributes to exhaustion, low mood, and craving those fatty/sugary foods that give you an instant hit of energy, but make you feel like rubbish in the long run.

A lot of it is about being prepared, too.  We all hear about the benefits of meal/snack planning; so many of my super-organised mum friends are all over it.  And I’m over here like ‘yeah, that sounds like a great idea!’, and then never actually implementing anything.  So that’s my challenge for these coming few weeks.  To eat better.  To do some research.  To get around my outdoor fitness community who are a wealth of knowledge and inspiration.  To not constantly feel bloated and gross.

In the meantime I’ll keep trying to work off that packet of Cheezels that I smashed last night.
